The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, having considered the research interests of our faculty and the broader public health concerns associated with tobacco use, has determined that it will no longer accept new research grants, contracts, or gifts from any tobacco manufacturer, or distributor, or other tobacco-related company. This policy reflects our mission to better the human condition and advance the fundamental understanding of medical science while improving the health of the public.
The list of companies currently considered to be “tobacco-related companies” is listed below. This list may be updated as necessary. This prohibition does not apply to funding from the Master Settlement Agreement nor to programs funded by tobacco excise taxes paid by consumers. The Dean’s Office will facilitate the search for appropriate research funds for School of Medicine faculty whose legitimate research goals may be impacted by this ban.
In addition, individual faculty members are strongly encouraged not to accept consulting fees or speaking engagements from tobacco-related companies.
