Procedure for Faculty Appointments

New faculty may be appointed in the School of Medicine as Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor.

Appointment as Instructor and Assistant Professor

Appointments as Instructor and Assistant Professor in the tenure stream or out of the tenure stream are made with the approval of the Vice Dean and the Dean/Senior Vice Chancellor. No committee review is required.

Appointment as Associate Professor and Professor

Department chairs may recommend new appointments at the rank of Associate Professor and Professor. Appointments at these ranks must be reviewed by the appropriate faculty committee and subsequently approved by the Executive Committee, Vice Dean, Dean/Senior Vice Chancellor, Provost, (and Chancellor for tenure appointments). The options for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor are described below.

1. Appointment in the appointment stream

Recommendation will be reviewed by the Appointment Stream Faculty Promotions and Appointments (ASFPA) Committee.

2. Appointment in the tenure stream

The recommendation will be reviewed by the Tenured Faculty Promotions and Appointments (TFPA) Committee. Appointment is made with a mandatory four year tenure probation period. The review for conferral of tenure must be completed no later than the end of the faculty member’s third year of tenure stream service. The recommendation for conferral of tenure will be reviewed by the Tenured Faculty Promotions and Appointments (TFPA) Committee and positive recommendations will proceed through the usual process. The fourth year is intended to conform to the Faculty Handbook policy of 12 months notice to the faculty member that a negative decision means tenure will not be awarded.

3. Appointment with tenure

The recommendation will be reviewed by the Tenured Faculty Promotions and Appointments (TFPA) Committee. As described in the School’s “Policy of Conferral of Tenure Concurrent with a New Appointment” “faculty appointed at the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor may be recommended for immediate conferral of tenure at the time of initial appointment.”
